"Ssgt. Draffen here again, I was the air traffic controller that attended your week long course at 8th Intel Bn, Camp Pendleton last September.

We appear to be homeward bound, and we used the PRC-117F daily throughout the operations in Kuwait and southern Iraq.

First, let me say, our PRC117s (we have 3 of them) operated beautifully throughout our operations. We used every capability they had, to include monitoring our IntraSqaud Radios (ISR) using the CTCSS bands. Our mission in life throughout these operations was to operate expeditionary airfields and landing zones. We used SINCGARs to communicate in vehicle convoys, HAVEQUICK to talk to aircraft, single channel LOS VHF/UHF frequencies to talk to aircraft and ground stations, as well as both DAMA and Dedicated SATCOM.

"The PRC-117 radio was the only radio capable of providing both short range and simultaneous long range communications during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan. Operating in frigid, high-altitude, mountainous environments is tough on any radio — but the PRC-117 performed flawlessly. The radio was used extensively by USAF tactical air control parties (TACP's) to call in USAF and USN close air support during Operation Anaconda. Bottom line, the PRC-117 saved a lot of American soldiers lives when they needed it most. In addition to the PRC-117's already long list of capable features, one more important characteristic can now be added: Combat proven!!!"
