Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS)

The Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) is a U.S. military initiative to develop a family of software programmable and modular communications systems that will become the principal means of communications for warfighters in the digital battlefield environment. All waveforms, protocols, encryption, and communications processes will be implemented in Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology.

Harris Corporation’s engineers are pioneers in the area of SDR technology, as evidenced by our digital FALCON® II architecture, that has been applied to handheld, manpack, vehicular, and base station systems. The AN/PRC-117F(C) multiband, multimission radio is a key member of the FALCON® II family selected by the JTRS Joint Program Office of the U.S. Department of Defense for its Step 2B architecture validation activities. Five JTRS procurement Clusters are currently planned and Harris is participating in the following:

Cluster 1
A contract for the System Development and Demonstration Phase of Cluster 1 was awarded to Boeing Space and Communications Unit, under which Harris is a subcontractor. Cluster 1 radios will provide the warfighter with a multi-channel software programmable, hardware-configurable digital radio networking system. Harris’ NSA-certified Sierra™ II cryptographic module allows the technology to be tailored to the program’s requirements for embedded security systems.

AMF Program
The merger of JTRS Clusters 3 (Maritime and Fixed Station) and 4 (Airborne) has become a reality. The combined effort will be known as the AMF (Airborne, Maritime and Fixed Station) JTRS Program. Program leadership for the combined project will rotate between the Navy and Air Force at different points in the project, with the Air Force taking the lead initially. A combined request for proposal for the pre-system development and demonstration phase is being developed.
